Jaffna Kings Dominate to Win LPL 2024 Title
Jaffna Kings won their fourth LPL 2024 title on Sunday at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, defeating Galle Marvels by nine wickets. They comfortably reached the 185-run mark thanks to strong innings from Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw.
Spectacular Chase by Jaffna Kings
Pathum Nissanka was dismissed on the first ball of the Jaffna Kings' batting innings. But Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw's outstanding efforts allowed them to finish the chase in just 15.4 overs. After hitting a century in Saturday's Qualifier 2 encounter against the Kandy Falcons, Kusal Mendis amassed an unbeaten 72 runs off 40 balls. On the other hand, South Africa's Rossouw reached a century off 50 balls before reaching an unbeaten 106 off 53 balls. In his innings, he scored seven sixes and nine fours.
Galle's Struggles with Bowling
The only other bowler to record a wicket was Dwaine Pretorius, despite Galle captain Niroshan Dickwella using six bowlers. Leading spinner Maheesh Theekshana conceded 34 runs in four overs without taking a wicket. After winning the toss, the Jaffna Kings had already decided to bowl first. They were rewarded for their decision when they took Galle to 24/3 in 6.5 overs.
Rajapaksa's Heroic Effort
As things appeared to be getting worse for the Galle Marvels, Bhanuka Rajapaksa came up with a brilliant 82 runs in 34 balls. The left-hander hit up to six sixes and eight fours. He made two important partnerships: first, with Tim Seifert, for 62 runs off 32 balls, and then, with Sahan Arachchige, for a very useful 72 runs off 30 balls, for the fifth wicket. Galle overcame their early setbacks and finished at 184/6 in 20 overs because of the knock.
Strong Bowling by Jaffna Kings
The Jaffna Kings spinner Asitha Fernando took three wickets, and his partner Jason Behrendorff gave up just eighteen runs in four overs for two wickets.
